Best First Steroid Cycle

Your first steroid cycle is one of the most transformative experiences you'll have. The gains come faster, the strength climbs higher, and the changes in the mirror happen almost weekly. But running your first cycle properly is critical - it sets the foundation for everything that follows.

Here's exactly how to do it right.

The Golden Rule: Testosterone Only

Your first cycle should be testosterone and nothing else. Here's why:

  • Baseline response - You need to learn how YOUR body responds to exogenous testosterone before adding other variables
  • Side effect identification - If you stack multiple compounds, you won't know which one is causing a given side effect
  • Results are excellent - A testosterone-only cycle will deliver more gains than most people expect. You don't need to add anything else to see dramatic results
  • Manageable side effects - Testosterone is the hormone your body already produces. Side effects are well-documented and easily managed

The Recommended First Cycle

Weeks 1-12: Testosterone Cypionate or Enanthate

Dose: 400-500mg per week
Injection frequency: 2x per week (e.g., Monday and Thursday)
Injection site: Glutes or ventrogluteal (upper outer quadrant of the buttock)

Weeks 1-12: Aromatase Inhibitor (on hand)

Compound: Arimidex (Anastrozole)
Dose: 0.5mg every other day only if estrogen sides appear (nipple sensitivity, bloating, mood swings)
Note: Don't take an AI preemptively. Estrogen is beneficial for muscle growth, joint health, and mood. Only use it if you experience symptoms.

Weeks 14-18: Post Cycle Therapy

Compound: Clomid 50mg daily for 4 weeks
Start: 14 days after your last injection (to allow the ester to clear)

Week-by-Week: What to Expect

Weeks 1-2: The Loading Phase

Not much visible change yet. Testosterone takes 2-3 weeks to build to effective blood levels. You might notice improved mood, energy, and libido. This is normal - your body is adjusting to supraphysiological hormone levels.

Weeks 3-4: The Switch Flips

Strength begins climbing noticeably. You'll add weight to the bar nearly every session. Muscle pumps become more intense and longer-lasting. You may notice some water retention and increased appetite.

Weeks 5-8: Peak Growth

This is where the magic happens. Visible muscle growth week over week. Recovery between sessions shortens dramatically - you can train harder and more frequently. Expect to gain 2-4 lbs per week (a mix of muscle, water, and glycogen).

Weeks 9-12: Maximum Development

Cumulative gains become very apparent. Strength is at all-time highs. You look noticeably different to people around you. Continue training hard and eating in a surplus to maximise this phase.

Weeks 14-18: PCT and Recovery

Some water weight will drop, revealing the lean tissue underneath. Strength may decrease slightly but stabilises. Energy and mood may dip temporarily as natural testosterone restarts. Stay consistent with training and nutrition.

Realistic First Cycle Results

  • Lean muscle gain: 15-25 lbs (you'll keep 10-15 lbs after water drops during PCT)
  • Strength increase: 20-30% on major compound lifts
  • Body fat: Typically stays the same or slightly decreases despite eating more
  • Recovery: Training frequency can increase from 4x to 5-6x per week

Nutrition During Your First Cycle

Don't waste enhanced recovery and protein synthesis by under-eating:

  • Calories: 300-500 above maintenance (use a TDEE calculator as your starting point)
  • Protein: 1-1.2g per pound of bodyweight daily
  • Carbohydrates: Don't cut carbs - they fuel training and drive insulin-mediated muscle growth
  • Water: 1 gallon (4 litres) minimum daily - testosterone increases red blood cell count, and dehydration thickens blood

Training Tips

  • Focus on progressive overload - add weight or reps every session
  • Prioritise compound movements: squats, deadlifts, bench press, overhead press, rows
  • Increase training volume gradually as recovery improves
  • Don't chase pump-style training exclusively - you're building real tissue, not just temporary swelling

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  1. Running too many compounds - Stick to testosterone only. Adding Dbol, Deca, or Tren to a first cycle is unnecessary and reckless
  2. Under-eating - You have a limited window of enhanced growth. Use it
  3. Skipping PCT - Non-negotiable. Read our full PCT guide
  4. Extending the cycle past 12 weeks - Longer isn't better for a first cycle. Diminishing returns set in while side effect risk increases
  5. Injecting incorrectly - Learn proper injection technique. Use a 23-25 gauge needle, inject slowly, and rotate sites
